Ask Officer Michelle – Question #15

Posted by Kalikid05

Officer Michelle,

Who could I contact to discuss the problems with homeless and pan handlers standing outside of my business? I ask them everyday to leave and the same 4-5 show up everyday. My customers do not appreciate being bothered nor do they feel safe when it is dark. I understand this is going to be a low priority, but I wish something could be done. Thanks

Dear Kalikid05,

This is a common complaint among business owners especially down town. The first thing you want to do is to ensure you have “No Loitering” signage posted in an area that is visible to the public. Once these signs are up, the police department can begin investigating the loitering parties.

If you suspect that these individuals and others are committing additional crimes such as drug activity, public urination, or any other types of crimes, call dispatch at (916) 264-5471. If your business is either in the North area or downtown, call (916) 566-6401 and ask to speak with a Problem Oriented Policing (POP) officer, or (916) 277-6001 if your business is either in the South or East area of Sacramento. The POP officers work with area businesses on problems such as this all the time. Call during business hours. They’ll help you.

Officer Michelle
