This is a complicated question. Assuming that the population of a city and county stays the same, adding more officers would definitely reduce crime. Police visibility deters crime. It also allows officers to do more pro-active and community oriented policing as opposed to going from call to call. If the boundaries and population continue to grow, you must add police in order to continue the same coverage as before. There are areas of cities and counties that foster more crimes than other parts. The higher crime areas are obviously going to require more police presence than areas that don’t have as much crime. The City of Sacramento is composed into 6 different districts. There is an appropriate number of police officers according to the demographics and crime statistics in each district. Most importantly, adding police is only one factor needed to reduce crime. It takes a whole community. It takes parents, teachers and schools, churches, and the criminal justice system as a whole to reduce crime.
I hope this helped. Officer Michelle
