Ask A Recruiter – Question #143

Posted by ArtColeman86

Good Afternoon,
My name is Arthur Coleman and I’m currently serving in the United States Marine Corps. I have 21 months left in the service and I plan to get out and join the police force in Sacramento. I was wondering what are some things that I can do now to prepare me to be success in Joining the the Sacramento police department and becoming an Officer?

Dear ArtColeman86,

You have plenty of time.  I would recommend starting the application process 60 days before you are finished with the military.  In the meantime, I recommend you also study websites and get to know the agency that you want to work for, including the requirements for being hired as a police officer.  Sac PD’s website provides thorough information on preparation. I would also start talking to officers and going on ride-alongs.  You may also consider using your G.I. Bill to fund a non-affiliate police academy.  This will make you more attractive to an agency that is experiencing budget problems.

Thank you for writing.
