Ask A Recruiter – Question #144

Posted by Nate09

Have just have a question about my recent military experience. I was recently discharged from the military for wrongful use of marijuana and an AWOL charge, I received a bad conduct discharge.  I have no criminal history, no tickets or any other negative things going against me. I’ve recently been doing volunteer work and went on my first ride-along last week and am currently going to college. I’ve wanted to become a police officer for as long as I can remember and I am really trying to better myself to make this happen. Will my discharge or any of the charges against me stop my becoming a police officer?

Thanks

Dear Nate009,

Those offenses will not prohibit you from becoming a police officer, but they will slow you down. Agencies will want time to look at your past to make sure that kind of behavior is gone.  They will look at what you have done, and what you are doing to better yourself.  Remember positions are very limited nowadays  and the competition is tough. If you can obtain higher education and do community service work, that will look good on your resume.
