Ask Officer Michelle – Question #472

Posted by oneluckyguy

Recently I was riding my bicycle to run errands and was refused service at a pharmacy drive-up window. They said it was "the law" to refuse service to cyclists.

Are you aware of any law or ordinance that governs this? It sounds to me like a store policy rather than a law.

Thanks.

Dear oneluckyguy,

There isn’t a law against it but the store may have a policy of not serving bicycles at the drive-up window. It might be that bicycles are not as visible as other vehicles therefore they don’t want to create a hazardous situation the store could be liable for.

There has been quite a bit of debate on the subject in the bicycle community. Your best bet would probably be to talk to the store’s manager. Maybe the employee at the drive-up window was mistaken. Either way, you could benefit by letting the manager know your thoughts about the service refusal.

Good luck and stay safe,

Officer Michelle
