Ask Officer Michelle – Question #479

Posted by evelia65

My ex husband has our daughter that is nine years old every other weekend. When she is with him, he leaves her unsupervised for hours while he and his girlfriend sleep behind a locked door. My daughter goes outside and "plays" while they are inside sleeping. She fixes her own food until they get up. The thought of this makes me sick and I have had enough of this. Can I call the police when this happens for them to go and write a report on this? They live down the street from the Rooney Police station off of Franklin Blvd.

Dear evelia65,

It’s understandable why you’re concerned. While your daughter is not with you, you want her to be taken care of properly and safely. If you have general safety concerns when she’s with her dad, you can call Child Protective Services (CPS) to check on the living conditions at that residence. If she is there and you have immediate safety concerns, then do call the police.

Another option would be to talk to your ex-husband about your concerns and what can be done about them. If that doesn’t work, you can go back to family court (assuming there is a legal custody agreement) and try to get the custody arrangement modified.

Hopefully these suggestions help.

Good luck,
Officer Michelle
