Ask A Recruiter – Question #216

Posted by dandem

Dear Recruiter,

I am interested in a career in law enforcement but recently lost my house due to the financial downturn and will have to file Bankruptcy due to financial liabilities from the foreclosure. I have always been responsible with my finances and had great credit prior to this event in my life. I was wondering your thoughts on my ability to enter a career in law enforcement with this blemish in my credit history?

Thank you for time and willingness to provide a forum for these types of questions.

Dan

Dear Dan,

Your story is like many others I have heard in recent times.  All the impact of a struggling economy.  Some of my fellow offers have even fallen victim to foreclosure.

Don’t give up or be discouraged.  Your financial history is just one aspect of what we take into consideration when completing a pre-employment background investigation.  We deal with people and their situations on a case-by-case basis.  Only the most serious things are automatic disqualifiers such as felony convictions and dishonesty.  Other that, we look at the whole person to determine if they are suitable for a career as a police officer with us.
