Ask A Recruiter – Question #219

Posted by M.Pennix

I am a CJ student in Georgia and will graduate with my Associates of Arts in Criminal Justice in June of 2013. How can I make it possible to start a career in Sacremento after graduating?

Dear M.Pennix,

Please visit our website at www.sacpd.org and look under the “inside Sac PD”/academy for details and answers to frequently asked questions about the academy and getting started on the road to becoming a police officer.  The deadline for applications is May 30 and the next academy starts July 2.

Visit the South Bay Academy web site at www.theacademy.ca.gov for information and links related to the POST assessment test that needs to be passed prior to being accepted into an academy.

We presently are in a hiring freeze and have no jobs to offer after the academy.  However, some agencies are starting to hire again.  Check out the CA POST website at www.post.ca.gov to see who is hiring.

Internships:  Please visit our newly updated website at www.sacpd.org/getinvolved/student for details about student internships under the “get involved” with Sac PD section.  A drop down list with selections for non-paid “student and youth” intern and “volunteer” will appear.  Check out the requirements listed for each position and decide what works for you.  At the moment it will likely take about two months after you submit your application to get an interview so your patience is appreciated.

Lastly, it doesn’t matter where you get your education as long as the institute that you obtain the credits from is accredited.  There is no one formula to becoming a police officer.  You have to decide which way works best for you.
