Ask A Recruiter – Question #222
Posted by XCCgirl92
Hello, I know this question has been asked before, but I think everyone’s situation is different. My dream is to become a police officer and I am currently working on finish my BA in Criminal Justice. The only concern I have is whether or not my past history of Seizures will hinder my goal. I have not had one in over a year and it takes a lot to bring one on. I have had about 3-4 in my life, but those were about 4 years ago. Since then I have been on a medication and as long as I take them, I have no Seizures. My question is, since the medicine prevents my Seizures and I have had very few, will that still affect my chances of becoming an officer?
Dear XCCgirl92,
You certainly cannot be denied an opportunity to apply for a career as a police officer nor can you be denied an opportunity to apply for a police academy. A medical expert will make a recommendation of whether this is the right career for you when you do go through a police hiring process.
However, the best recommendation I have for you is to ask yourself this: If I suffered a seizure due to job stress, missed lunch break (a regular occurrence), missed medication or a metabolic change in my body that requires a modification of medication, etc., would my safety, the safety of my partner, or the safety of any other person who is relying on my help be jeopardized? Sometimes you are the only one that can answer that question, not a doctor. So, ask yourself and be honest, because lives are at stake.
Thank you for your post.
