Ask Officer Michelle – Question #545

Posted by carlton

Can you provide or direct me to information on the implementation of the city of Sacramento’s Ammunition Ordinance with statistics that may show its value to the community past 2009? There is no information in the annual report beyond that year. Thanks very much
Carlton Ashley

Dear carlton,

If you are asking me about newer or amended laws pertaining to ammunition, it would be best for you to view the Department of Justice website relating to ammunition. Go to www.doj.ca.gov and search ammunition. There is AB962 which talks about ammunition and who is prohibited from possessing it. It also covers the legislation that passed in 2009 concerning vendors, providing ammunition to juveniles, and members in or associated with a gang in possession of ammunition.

The city ordinances haven’t changed. The ordinances relating to ammunition are going to be in the 5.60.000 series. There are also multiple California Penal Code sections relating to ammunition which affect the City of Sacramento.

The Sacramento Police Department hasn’t changed its enforcement on guns and ammunition enforcement. But, the statistics haven’t been published since the 2009 issue of the Annual Report because after layoffs in 2011, we stopped gathering stats. We have some stats for 2010 but they are not complete (approximately 75 felons purchased ammunition).

Thank you for your post.

Officer Michelle

Thanks very much for the reply. I purchased ammunition for the first time in the city limits and as a upstanding Sacramento City citizen burdened with this extra step of fingerprinting, Its important to know that not all for nothing and its helping keep ammunition out of the hands of ineligibles.
