Ask Officer Michelle – Question #546

Posted by Sharon Hill

Over a month ago, there was an accident infront of my house. The car had its bumper torn off, and the owner of the car was to leave the bumper in my yard until the next day. What do i do with it, it still has her plate on it, and she left zero information

Dear Sharon Hill,

Call the local police department in your jurisdiction. If you live in the county, CHP handles all traffic related incidents. If you live in the city limits, call the Sacramento Police Department. If there were no injuries, the vehicle didn’t require a tow, and there were no obvious violations, a report may have not been taken and the police may have not even responded. In cases like that, it is below minimum reporting standards and the two parties involved simply exchange information.

An officer or representative of the department could respond to pick up that bumper and license plate and take it off your hands. Thank you for your post.

Officer Michelle
