Ask Officer Michelle – Question #551

Posted by Katherine

I recently broke up with a man I have been seeing for 2 years on and off. I do not wish to continue the relationship any longer and want my property back, these are not simple items like clothes or hair products. The property I have there is worth $700. I have tried contacted him several times, he flat out refuses to give me my stuff back.(I have documentation of his refusal) I have asked him to simply leave the property by the front door so I can pick it up without any contact with him, he still denies me this. I have a key to his house(given to me during a happier time) but I am unsure of my rights with it. As well as, he often drinks during the day and he owns many firearms that he is not afraid to use. I fear that if I come unannounced into the home he could be violent. In the days leading up to our break up he exhibited violent behavior. I want to pick up my property with as little conflict as I can, but I don’t know the best way to accomplish this. Please advise.

Dear Katherine,

I get this type of question a lot. In situations like this, if the items can be replaced, I would suggest you move on. Products and items can be replaced. You have already told me that he has been violent towards you and that he has firearms. I would run as far away as fast as you can from this man. Don’t look back, and don’t even think about putting yourself in a harmful situation. Let it go…

Officer Michelle
