Ask Officer Michelle – Question #552

Posted by stina

I lost my dog on 01/04/13.
Found out who had her on 01/23/13.
Asked for her to be returned on 01/23/13.
As of date 02/02/13 my dog hasn’t been returned.
This person acknowledges it’s my dog, knows where it is located yet wont return my dog. This person says they sold it but knows who they sold it to and where my dog is.

What can I do to get my dog back?
Is my lost property now considered stolen since they wont return it to me?
Please help! Thank You!!!

Dear stina,

If the dog is registered to you, and you can prove that the dog is yours (via photographs, witnesses), you can call the police in your jurisdiction for assistance. If the dog is unregistered, you would have to hire a civil attorney to get your dog back.

If you are able to get your dog back, I would highly suggest that you chip it at your local veterinarian. Good luck on getting your dog back.

Officer Michelle
