Ask Officer Michelle – Question #333

Posted by mzmelody1

Officer Michelle. My studies are in Criminal Justice at this time. I would like to inquire about the Detective Investigation Department. I would like to become a mentee with a detective. I am not sure as to where to begin, would you be able to direct me? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Dear mzmelody1,

The route to becoming a detective in our agency begins with first becoming a police officer and then working at least two years before being eligible to apply for a specialized assignment, such as detective.  It’s a great idea to get some “real world” experience any way you can so I encourage you to look into student internships.  We offer unpaid internships in a variety of areas of the department including Investigations. As a volunteer you can received the knowledge, experience and mentoring you desire. We also have paid student trainee positions but we are not hiring for those at this time.

Check out this link to learn all about student internship opportunities: http://www.sacpd.org/getinvolved/student/intern/  You can download an application from that site.

Thanks for writing and good luck with your career plans.

Officer Michelle
