Ask A Recruiter – Question #114

Posted by ndokic

Hi,

I am currently finishing my third year at UCSC working on a double-major degree in Politics and Legal Studies. I will be graduating in a year and was wondering what my first steps would be toward becoming a police officer and how good of a position I will be in in terms of candidacy.

Thank you for your help.

Dear ndokic,

The first step toward a career in law enforcement is to submit the application on-line when it is open at www.sacpd.org.  You must be at least 21 years old.  My suggestion is to get to know our department: Study the website, go on a ride-a-long, talk to officers within the department, read the annual report, and view the City Beat episodes on the website.  Completing your degree is a wonderful thing! It makes you more marketable in a hiring process and it shows that you are willing to go the extra mile to make yourself better.  As it stands, the hiring process is still competitive and you being hired will depend on the budget and your personal background.
